One of the perks of working at Watershed Wellness is that we can rely on our fellow colleagues and excellent practitioners when we are in need of some healthcare ourselves. It’s been awhile since I’ve had acupuncture, and I am delighted that I was able to make my schedule link up with our newest acupuncturist, Melinda, for an acupuncture treatment.
I always forget that I’m not much of a fan of acupuncture until I’m lying on the table about to get acupuncture.
The anticipation of the needles always does interesting things to my body. I think that the reason that I forget this is because once the actual needling is done, the energetic and relaxing effects of the treatment take over and I feel better pretty much instantly.
My big takeaway of this treatment was: why did I wait so long?
The minute I walked into her treatment room I felt comfortable and supported. This is a room that I’ve been in many, many times both as a practitioner and while being treated. Something felt different about the room, and I can only imagine that it’s the care, attention and intention that Melinda puts into her space and her treatment that makes something palpably different about the space.
Melinda is one of those people who you find yourself telling things to that you didn’t mean to say.
Things that you don’t talk to openly to other folks about. Things that you might not even have been upfront with yourself about until you sit down across from her at the table and she starts to ask you questions. The way that she asks questions and her responses and feedback helped me to feel safe and very supported.
She was completely focused on what I was telling her and I felt as though she heard everything I had to say, and also picked up on some of the things that I wasn’t saying.
As for the treatment part of the session, Melinda made sure that I was comfortable with the room, the music, the temperature and with the draping. Her needle insertion was gentle and attentive. I got to spend 15 or so glorious minutes in that in-between space that acupuncture can facilitate – not quite asleep and not quite awake. After the 15 minutes was up, Melinda came in and did some CranioSacral Therapy on me (CST is a gentle type of bodywork that works with the crainosacral fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord). This work is deeply relaxing for most folks – including me!
After the session, I feel like I can breathe more fully, I have more clarity around the tasks that I have to do (and actually got big to-do list item knocked out this morning that I’ve been putting off!), and that my main issues were addressed.
I can’t wait for my next appointment with Melinda – I’ve always known that this work was powerful, and I am so happy that we’ve got such a talented, intuitive, caring and empathetic person on staff here at Watershed Wellness.
If you haven’t had acupuncture before, I highly recommend Melinda as someone to try out.
As she tells me, she loves seeing “newbies”. Take a look at her schedule here, or call 503-820-8040 and we can find a time that works best for you to get the care that you need.
